Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the short version on pairing guarana with your Insulin Lispro (Admelog). Guarana is basically a concentrated source of caffeine, and the concern on file is mostly theoretical: caffeine may nudge your blood sugar in either direction. The reports are mixed, the effect is rated minor, and it's considered unlikely to cause a real problem for most people.

Insulin lispro is a fast-acting mealtime insulin, so its job is to bring your sugar down. If caffeine adds a little unpredictability on top of that, you could see numbers that swing higher or lower than you expect, which makes hypoglycemia (shakiness, sweating, confusion) harder to read. A morning cup of coffee likely won't matter much, but high-dose energy products can. If you want to use guarana regularly, check with your pharmacist or doctor and keep an eye on your readings.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Insulin Lispro page

“Blood sugar is the entire subject of this list. Insulin lispro (Admelog) is a rapid mealtime insulin dosed to bring glucose down after eating, and the supplements below can shove that same number around, most of them downward, which risks a genuine low.”

About Guarana

What is Guarana?

Guarana
  • Energy and alertness
  • Reducing fatigue
  • Weight loss support
  • Athletic performance
  • Mental focus

Guarana is an Amazonian seed that is naturally high in caffeine, which explains most of its stimulant and energy effects. While it may give a short-term boost in alertness and reduce fatigue, strong evidence for weight loss or major performance gains is limited, and it carries the same risks as too much caffeine. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have heart problems, anxiety, or are pregnant.
