Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the short version on combining guarana with your albiglutide (Tanzeum): this is a minor, mostly theoretical concern. Albiglutide is an injectable that helps your pancreas release insulin when your blood sugar is high. The caffeine in guarana isn't broken down by the same pathways, so it doesn't really change how albiglutide works in your body.

The wrinkle is that caffeine itself can nudge blood sugar around a little, and the reports are mixed (some say up, some say down). For most people taking a sensible amount, this won't cause a problem. But if you use a lot of guarana and notice your numbers acting unpredictable, that's worth mentioning. Keep checking your blood sugar as usual, and run any big change in caffeine use past your pharmacist or doctor first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Albiglutide page

“People injecting albiglutide (Tanzeum) once a week for type 2 diabetes are often the same people eyeing supplements marketed for blood sugar, and that overlap is exactly where this list calls for real vigilance. Every one of the 239 ingredients on file touches glucose control in some way, most by adding to albiglutide's glucose-lowerin…”

About Guarana

What is Guarana?

Guarana
  • Energy and alertness
  • Reducing fatigue
  • Weight loss support
  • Athletic performance
  • Mental focus

Guarana is an Amazonian seed that is naturally high in caffeine, which explains most of its stimulant and energy effects. While it may give a short-term boost in alertness and reduce fatigue, strong evidence for weight loss or major performance gains is limited, and it carries the same risks as too much caffeine. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have heart problems, anxiety, or are pregnant.
