Guarana and Metaproterenol

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

Why this applies to Metaproterenol

Metaproterenol falls under BETA-ADRENERGIC AGONISTS — the group Guarana interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use might increase the clinical effects of beta-adrenergic agonists.
Guarana contains caffeine. Theoretically, concomitant use of large amounts of caffeine might increase cardiac inotropic effects of beta-agonists.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence D

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Metaproterenol is a quick-relief inhaler medicine that opens up your airways, but it can also rev up your heart a bit, sometimes giving you a faster heartbeat, a jittery or shaky feeling, or a touch of nervousness. Guarana is basically a concentrated source of caffeine, which is itself a stimulant. So when you pair the two, you're essentially stacking two things that push your heart and nervous system in the same direction.

The concern here is mostly theoretical, based on how these substances behave rather than strong studies, so I don't want to alarm you. A cup of coffee likely won't be a big deal, but heavy guarana doses could make those jittery, racing-heart, or anxious feelings more noticeable. If you have a heart condition or already feel wired on your inhaler, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before using guarana.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Metaproterenol page

“Metaproterenol is an older bronchodilator for asthma and COPD, and because the receptors it stimulates to open the airways also quicken the heart, its 32 interacting supplements call for real vigilance. The lone major entry is activated charcoal, which can bind the drug and cut how much reaches your bloodstream.”

About Guarana

What is Guarana?

Guarana
  • Energy and alertness
  • Reducing fatigue
  • Weight loss support
  • Athletic performance
  • Mental focus

Guarana is an Amazonian seed that is naturally high in caffeine, which explains most of its stimulant and energy effects. While it may give a short-term boost in alertness and reduce fatigue, strong evidence for weight loss or major performance gains is limited, and it carries the same risks as too much caffeine. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have heart problems, anxiety, or are pregnant.
