Guarana and Insulin (Human)

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Insulin (Human)

Insulin (Human) falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Guarana interacts with.

Theoretically, taking guarana with antidiabetes drugs might interfere with blood glucose control.
Some conflicting reports claim that caffeine, a constituent of guarana, might increase or decrease blood sugar.
Severity Minor Likelihood Unlikely Evidence B

Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist with guarana and your insulin: guarana is basically a concentrated caffeine source, and caffeine can have a small, somewhat unpredictable effect on blood sugar. The research is mixed, so some people may see blood sugar tick up a little while others may notice it dip. Either way, it's the caffeine nudging your numbers, not anything that breaks down your insulin.

This is rated a minor and unlikely interaction, so most folks won't have a problem. Still, because insulin already lowers blood sugar, it's worth watching for the usual signs of a low, like shakiness, sweating, fast heartbeat, or feeling dizzy, especially when you first add guarana. Keep an eye on your glucose readings and check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting it.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Insulin (Human) page

“With human insulin (Novolin, Afrezza), extra glucose lowering is not a nuisance, it is the hazard itself, and this is one of the lists I treat as genuinely serious. Nearly every ingredient here either drops blood sugar on its own or adds to insulin's effect, and the combination can push a normal dose into hypoglycemia, a dangerous low.”

About Guarana

What is Guarana?

Guarana
  • Energy and alertness
  • Reducing fatigue
  • Weight loss support
  • Athletic performance
  • Mental focus

Guarana is an Amazonian seed that is naturally high in caffeine, which explains most of its stimulant and energy effects. While it may give a short-term boost in alertness and reduce fatigue, strong evidence for weight loss or major performance gains is limited, and it carries the same risks as too much caffeine. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have heart problems, anxiety, or are pregnant.
