Guarana and Glyburide

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Glyburide

Glyburide falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Guarana interacts with.

Theoretically, taking guarana with antidiabetes drugs might interfere with blood glucose control.
Some conflicting reports claim that caffeine, a constituent of guarana, might increase or decrease blood sugar.
Severity Minor Likelihood Unlikely Evidence B

Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the short version: guarana is basically a concentrated caffeine source, and caffeine can nudge your blood sugar in either direction. Because glyburide works by pushing your pancreas to release insulin, mixing the two means your blood sugar control could become a little less predictable while you're on this combo.

The good news is this is rated a minor and unlikely interaction, and the evidence is fairly weak and even conflicting. An occasional coffee or tea is unlikely to be a problem. The bigger thing to watch is that caffeine's jittery feeling (fast heartbeat, shakiness, sweating) can mimic or mask a low blood sugar from glyburide, making it harder to spot. If you use guarana regularly, check your sugars more closely and let your pharmacist or doctor know.

About Guarana

What is Guarana?

Guarana
  • Energy and alertness
  • Reducing fatigue
  • Weight loss support
  • Athletic performance
  • Mental focus

Guarana is an Amazonian seed that is naturally high in caffeine, which explains most of its stimulant and energy effects. While it may give a short-term boost in alertness and reduce fatigue, strong evidence for weight loss or major performance gains is limited, and it carries the same risks as too much caffeine. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have heart problems, anxiety, or are pregnant.
