Guarana and Amphetamine

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Guarana interacts with whole categories of medication. Amphetamine falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Guarana in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

STIMULANT DRUGS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Amphetamine

Amphetamine falls under STIMULANT DRUGS — the group Guarana interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use might increase stimulant adverse effects.
Guarana contains caffeine. Due to the central nervous system (CNS) stimulant effects of caffeine, concomitant use with stimulant drugs can increase the risk of adverse effects.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to keep in mind: guarana is basically a concentrated source of caffeine, and amphetamine (like Dyanavel XR or Mydayis) is already a powerful stimulant for your nervous system. Stacking two stimulants together can pile on the same kinds of effects, so you might feel a racing or pounding heartbeat, jitteriness, anxiety, trouble sleeping, or a bump in your blood pressure. Amphetamine itself isn't a prodrug here, so the worry is simply additive stimulation, not a change in how the drug is broken down.

This is a theoretical concern based on how both work, not strong proof of harm, and a little caffeine in a soda is different from a high-dose energy supplement. Still, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

MONOAMINE OXIDASE INHIBITORS (MAOIs)

2 of 2

Amphetamine also falls under MONOAMINE OXIDASE INHIBITORS (MAOIs).

Theoretically, concomitant use might increase the risk of a hypertensive crisis.
Guarana contains caffeine. Caffeine has been shown to inhibit MAO-A and -B in laboratory studies. Concomitant intake of large amounts of caffeine with MAOIs might precipitate a hypertensive crisis. In a case report, a patient that consumed 10-12 cups of caffeinated coffee and took the MAOI tranylcypromine presented with severe hypertension. Hypertension was resolved after the patient switched to drinking decaffeinated coffee.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to keep in mind with guarana and your amphetamine medication: both are stimulants. Guarana is basically a concentrated source of caffeine, and amphetamine already revs up your nervous system to help with focus or wakefulness. Stacking the two can pile on the same effects, so you may notice a faster heartbeat, jitteriness, trouble sleeping, anxiety, or a bump in your blood pressure.

The specific worry on file is largely theoretical, based on lab work showing caffeine can mildly block the same enzymes (MAO) involved here, which in big amounts could push blood pressure too high. A daily energy supplement isn't the same as an occasional cup of coffee, so before adding guarana, please check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Guarana

What is Guarana?

Guarana
  • Energy and alertness
  • Reducing fatigue
  • Weight loss support
  • Athletic performance
  • Mental focus

Guarana is an Amazonian seed that is naturally high in caffeine, which explains most of its stimulant and energy effects. While it may give a short-term boost in alertness and reduce fatigue, strong evidence for weight loss or major performance gains is limited, and it carries the same risks as too much caffeine. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have heart problems, anxiety, or are pregnant.
