Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Airduo Respiclick combines two medicines: fluticasone, an inhaled steroid, and salmeterol, a long-acting beta-agonist that opens your airways. The part that matters here is salmeterol. Guarana is basically a concentrated source of caffeine, and caffeine is a stimulant too. On paper, stacking a stimulant on top of a beta-agonist could add up and slightly amp up the heart-related effects, like a faster or pounding heartbeat, jitteriness, or feeling shaky.

I'll be honest with you: this is a theoretical concern based on how these drugs work, not something proven to cause big problems. A normal puff or two of your inhaler with a little caffeine usually isn't a worry. Just go easy on large doses of guarana or energy products, and check with your pharmacist if your heart ever feels racy.

About Guarana

What is Guarana?

Guarana
  • Energy and alertness
  • Reducing fatigue
  • Weight loss support
  • Athletic performance
  • Mental focus

Guarana is an Amazonian seed that is naturally high in caffeine, which explains most of its stimulant and energy effects. While it may give a short-term boost in alertness and reduce fatigue, strong evidence for weight loss or major performance gains is limited, and it carries the same risks as too much caffeine. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have heart problems, anxiety, or are pregnant.
