Theoretically, guarana might reduce the effects of felbamate and increase the risk for convulsions.
Guarana contains caffeine. Animal research shows that a high dose of caffeine 161.7 mg/kg can decreases the anticonvulsant activity of felbamate. This effect has not been observed in humans.

Here's the gist for guarana and felbamate. Felbamate is your seizure medicine, and the concern on file is that the caffeine packed into guarana might work against it. In animal studies, very high caffeine doses seemed to weaken felbamate's ability to control seizures, which in theory could raise the chance of a breakthrough seizure or convulsion. Felbamate is not a prodrug, so this isn't about your body activating it differently. It's more about caffeine possibly counteracting the calming effect on the brain.

I want to be honest: this comes from lab and animal research only and has not been shown in people, so it's theoretical. A normal cup of coffee is unlikely to matter much, but concentrated guarana energy products are a different story. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding it.

About Felbamate

What Is Felbamate Used For?

Brand name: Felbatol

Felbamate is not a first-line seizure medication. It is used only when a person's epilepsy has not responded well enough to other treatments and the seizures are severe enough that the serious risks of this drug are considered acceptable.

In adults, felbamate can be used alone or alongside other antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) to treat partial seizures (seizures that start in one part of the brain), with or without spreading to become a full seizure. In children, felbamate is used as an add-on treatment for both partial and generalized seizures linked to Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, a severe form of childhood epilepsy. Felbatol is specifically labeled for these uses in both adults and children.
