Valsartan falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Gymnema interacts with.

Theoretically, gymnema might increase or decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9.
Animal research shows that gymnema can induce the CYP2C9 enzyme. In one animal study, gymnema caused a 2.4-fold increase in the clearance of tolbutamide, a CYP2C9 substrate, in rats. In vitro research also shows that gymnema can inhibit CYP2C9.

Here's the honest picture with gymnema and valsartan. Valsartan is partly handled by a liver enzyme called CYP2C9, and lab and animal studies hint that gymnema could nudge that enzyme in either direction. That means it's hard to say for sure which way things would go: gymnema might slightly speed up how fast you clear valsartan (potentially weakening its blood pressure control) or slow it down a bit (which could lower your blood pressure more than expected, sometimes causing dizziness or lightheadedness).

The good news is this is theoretical, based only on test-tube and rat studies, not real patients, so I wouldn't panic. Just keep in mind that gymnema may also lower blood sugar on its own. If you'd like to try it, check with your pharmacist or doctor first and keep an eye on your blood pressure.

About Valsartan

What Is Valsartan Used For?

Brand names: Diovan, Prexxartan

Valsartan treats high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children, heart failure in adults, and reduces the risk of cardiovascular death in adults who have had a heart attack and have a weakened heart muscle. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of stroke and heart attack.

Diovan (valsartan) tablets are approved to treat high blood pressure in children as young as 1 year old. Valsartan tablets (other brands) are approved for children 6 years and older. Valsartan oral solution is specifically indicated for patients with heart failure or post-heart attack left ventricular dysfunction who are unable to swallow tablets.
