Animal research shows that jambolan seed and bark extracts can lower blood glucose levels. Theoretically, jambolan might have additive effects when used with antidiabetes drugs. This might increase the risk of hypoglycemia in some patients. Monitor blood glucose levels closely.

Here's the thing to keep in mind: Levemir (insulin detemir) already does the heavy lifting of lowering your blood sugar. Jambolan, especially the seed and bark extracts found in concentrated supplements, may nudge your sugar down a little further on its own. Stack the two together and those effects can add up, which could push your blood sugar lower than you intend.

If that happens, you might feel the usual low blood sugar warning signs: shakiness, sweating, a racing heart, dizziness, confusion, or sudden hunger. I'll be honest, this concern comes mostly from animal studies, not strong human research, so it's more of a be aware than a be alarmed. Eating the fruit as food is unlikely to cause trouble. Before adding a jambolan supplement, check with your pharmacist or doctor and keep a closer eye on your readings.

Brand name: Levemir

Levemir (insulin detemir) is used to improve blood sugar (glucose) control in adults and children with type 1 diabetes or type 2 diabetes. It is a basal insulin, meaning it works around the clock to keep background blood sugar levels steady.

Levemir is not recommended for treating diabetic ketoacidosis (a dangerous buildup of acids in the blood that requires a different type of insulin).
