Jambolan and Ramelteon

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES

Why this applies to Ramelteon

Ramelteon falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Jambolan interacts with.

There is some in vitro evidence that jambolan can inhibit CYP2C9. Theoretically, concomitant use of jambolan with CYP2C9 substrates may increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version. Your body clears Ramelteon partly through a liver enzyme called CYP2C9. Lab-dish research suggests Jambolan may slow that same enzyme down. If that happens in real life, Ramelteon could hang around a bit longer than usual, which might make its effects stronger, think extra drowsiness, grogginess, or feeling foggy the next morning.

That said, this is theoretical. The evidence comes only from test-tube studies, not people, so we honestly don't know how much it matters in practice. Eating the fruit as food is very unlikely to be a problem. A concentrated Jambolan supplement is where I'd pause. Before combining the two, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on how sleepy you feel.

“Ramelteon (Rozerem) is a prescription sleep aid, and its 228 interacting supplements call for real care, starting with the nine rated major. The frustrating part is that the things sleepless people typically reach for, kava, CBD, a glass of wine before bed, sit at the heart of the problem.”

About Jambolan

  • Blood sugar support
  • Digestive upset and diarrhea
  • Sore throat and mouth health
  • Antimicrobial
  • General antioxidant support

Jambolan (Syzygium cumini), also called Java plum or black plum, is a tropical fruit tree traditionally used for blood sugar and digestive complaints. Human evidence for these uses is limited and not strong, so it should not replace proven treatments like diabetes medication. The fruit is safe as food, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated supplements.
