There is some in vitro evidence that jambolan can inhibit CYP2C9. Theoretically, concomitant use of jambolan with CYP2C9 substrates may increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9.

Here's the gist with rosiglitazone (Avandia) and jambolan. Your liver clears rosiglitazone using an enzyme called CYP2C9. In lab tests (not in people), jambolan seemed to slow that enzyme down. If that holds true in the body, rosiglitazone could clear a bit more slowly and build up, which might nudge its effects upward. With this drug, that could mean lower blood sugar than expected, plus its usual issues like fluid buildup, swelling in the legs, or weight gain.

I want to be honest: this is only test-tube evidence, so it's more theoretical than proven, and eating the fruit as food is unlikely to be a problem. Concentrated jambolan supplements are the bigger question, especially since they may lower blood sugar on their own. Please loop in your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Animal research shows that jambolan seed and bark extracts can lower blood glucose levels. Theoretically, jambolan might have additive effects when used with antidiabetes drugs. This might increase the risk of hypoglycemia in some patients. Monitor blood glucose levels closely.

Here's the simple version. Rosiglitazone (Avandia) lowers your blood sugar by making your body respond better to insulin. Jambolan, especially in concentrated seed or bark extracts, has shown in animal studies that it can nudge blood sugar down too. Put the two together and the effects may stack up, which could push your sugar lower than intended.

If that happens, you might feel signs of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia): shakiness, sweating, dizziness, hunger, or feeling confused. I want to be honest though, the evidence here is only from lab and animal work, so this is more of a theoretical concern than a proven one. Eating the fruit as food is unlikely to be an issue. If you're thinking about a supplement, check with your pharmacist or doctor first and keep an eye on your readings.

What Is Rosiglitazone Used For?

  • Rosiglitazone is used along with a diet and exercise program and sometimes with one or more other medications to treat type 2 diabetes (condition in which the body does not use insulin normally and therefore cannot control the amount of sugar in the blood). Rosiglitazone is in a class of medications called thiazolidinediones. It works by increasing the body's sensitivity to insulin, a natural substance that helps control blood sugar levels. Rosiglitazone is not used to treat type 1 diabetes (condition in which the body does not produce insulin and therefore cannot control the amount of sugar in the blood) or diabetic ketoacidosis (a serious condition that may occur if high blood sugar is not treated).

  • Over time, people who have diabetes and high blood sugar can develop serious or life-threatening complications, including heart disease, stroke, kidney problems, nerve damage, and eye problems. Taking medication(s), making lifestyle changes (e.g., diet, exercise, quitting smoking), and regularly checking your blood sugar may help to manage your diabetes and improve your health. This therapy may also decrease your chances of having a heart attack, stroke, or other diabetes-related complications such as kidney failure, nerve damage (numb, cold legs or feet; decreased sexual ability in men and women), eye problems, including changes or loss of vision, or gum disease. Your doctor and other healthcare providers will talk to you about the best way to manage your diabetes.
