Jambolan and Theophylline

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Theophylline and Jambolan in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

Jambolan safety at a glance

Jambolan overall Use caution The fruit is widely eaten as food, but concentrated supplement doses are not well studied.
Pregnancy Avoid Not enough safety data for medicinal amounts, so avoid supplements during pregnancy.
Breastfeeding Avoid Safety while breastfeeding is unknown, so it is best avoided in supplement form.

Safety guidance is general; always confirm with your pharmacist or doctor for your situation.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Theophylline

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Theophylline is filed under 6 classifications — including methylxanthines, cytochrome p450 1a2 (cyp1a2) substrates, cytochrome p450 1a2 (cyp1a2) substrates. Jambolan has documented interactions with 3 drug classes — the most serious being antidiabetes drugs (moderate), cytochrome p450 2c9 (cyp2c9) substrates (moderate) and sitagliptin (januvia) (minor) — and none of Theophylline’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

What Theophylline’s Own FDA Label Lists

This is not an interaction — none of it involves Jambolan. These are the most notable effects listed in the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of Theophylline’s own FDA label, for the medication by itself. Knowing the drug’s own list makes it easier to work out the likely cause if something new turns up while you take both. 9 of them are worth acting on rather than waiting out — marked below.

  • Severe muscle breakdown Worth acting on
  • Trouble passing urine Worth acting on
  • Low potassium Worth acting on
  • High blood sugar Worth acting on
  • An irregular heartbeat Worth acting on
  • Confusion Worth acting on
  • Seizures Worth acting on
  • A severe allergic reaction Worth acting on
  • Hives Worth acting on
  • Heartburn

Showing the 10 most notable of 25 label-listed effects — ranked by how unusual each one is across medicines generally, with serious effects weighted up.

From the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of the FDA label for Theophylline. Read the label on DailyMed › Where a percentage is shown, it is the share of 12,164 voluntary FDA FAERS reports for Theophylline that mention that effect — a reporting proportion, not an incidence rate and not evidence the drug caused it. Jambolan’s licensed record lists no adverse effects our clinical vocabulary could match, so there is no Jambolan side to compare — that is a limit of the record, not a statement that Jambolan has no side effects.

See Every Supplement That Interacts With Theophylline

This page covers Jambolan only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Theophylline page lists 126 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.

The most serious there right now: Activated Charcoal (major), Ephedra (major), Sida Cordifolia (major), Adrafinil (moderate) and African Wild Potato (moderate).

By severity: 3 major · 89 moderate · 34 minor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Theophylline page

“Stop ephedra before anything else if you take theophylline (Theo-Dur, Slo-Bid, and others) for asthma or COPD. Both are stimulants, and together they raise the risk of serious heart and nervous system effects; Sida cordifolia, an herb that contains ephedrine, carries the same major rating.”

About Jambolan

What is Jambolan?

  • Blood sugar support
  • Digestive upset and diarrhea
  • Sore throat and mouth health
  • Antimicrobial
  • General antioxidant support

Jambolan (Syzygium cumini), also called Java plum or black plum, is a tropical fruit tree traditionally used for blood sugar and digestive complaints. Human evidence for these uses is limited and not strong, so it should not replace proven treatments like diabetes medication. The fruit is safe as food, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated supplements.

Syzygium cumini · Myrtaceae · Seeds, fruit, leaves, and bark · Dried seed powder, capsules, tea, fruit extract, juice

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Jambolan is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Jambolan record says about it on its own.

Jambolan: dosing

There is no well-established standardized dose for Jambolan supplements. Traditional use and products vary widely in the part used (seed, fruit, leaf, or bark) and in how concentrated they are.Because a proven safe and effective dose has not been set, the best approach is to follow the directions on the product label and not exceed them.
