Deflazacort falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Jequirity interacts with.

In vitro research shows that jequirity extract inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes. Theoretically, taking jequirity may inhibit the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.

First things first: jequirity seeds aren't a real supplement. They contain abrin, a potent poison closely related to ricin, so you should never swallow them at all. That safety problem matters far more than any drug interaction here.

On the interaction itself, here's the idea. Your body uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear deflazacort. Lab-dish studies hint that jequirity might slow that enzyme down. If that happened in a person, deflazacort could build up and push its steroid side effects higher, think fluid retention, higher blood sugar, mood changes, or stomach upset. But this is only test-tube data and rated unlikely, so it's theoretical. The bottom line stays the same: don't use jequirity, and run any new product past your pharmacist or doctor.

Jequirity (Abrus precatorius) is a tropical plant whose bright red, black-tipped seeds contain abrin, one of the most toxic plant proteins known. Despite a long history in traditional medicine, the seeds are dangerously poisonous and there is no reliable evidence that it is safe or effective. It should not be used as a supplement or medicine.

What Is Deflazacort Used For?

Brand name: Emflaza

Deflazacort treats Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), a rare genetic muscle disease that causes progressive muscle weakness. It is available under several brand names, each with slightly different age approvals.

Emflaza and Jaythari (both tablets and oral suspension) are approved for patients 2 years of age and older. Deflazacort tablets, Deflazacort oral suspension, Kymbee (tablet and oral suspension), and Pyquvi (oral suspension) are approved for patients 5 years of age and older.
