Tenapanor Hydrochloride falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Jequirity interacts with.

In vitro research shows that jequirity extract inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes. Theoretically, taking jequirity may inhibit the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.

First things first: jequirity isn't something you should be taking at all. Its seeds contain abrin, a poison closely related to ricin, so safety is the real headline here, not this minor interaction.

On paper, lab studies suggest jequirity might block an enzyme called CYP3A4. The thinking is that this could slow the breakdown of medications cleared that way. With tenapanor (Ibsrela), this matters very little in practice. Tenapanor works right in the gut and barely gets absorbed into your bloodstream, so enzyme-based interactions usually don't move the needle. If anything did change, you'd most likely just notice more of its typical effect, which is diarrhea, along with possible bloating or belly cramps. This is only a theoretical, test-tube concern, but please talk with your pharmacist or doctor before mixing anything.

What Is Tenapanor Used For?

Brand name: Ibsrela

Tenapanor is approved for two distinct conditions, each under a separate brand. Ibsrela is used to treat irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C) in adults. XPHOZAH is used to reduce high phosphorus levels (hyperphosphatemia) in adults with chronic kidney disease (CKD) who are on dialysis — specifically as an add-on when phosphate binders haven't worked well enough or aren't tolerated.
