Atazanavir falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) INHIBITORS — the group Limonene interacts with.

There's preliminary evidence that limonene might be a substrate for cytochrome P450 2C9 (CYP2C9). So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. However, watch for side effects in patients taking limonene and CYP2C9 inhibitors. Some CYP2C9 inhibitors include amiodarone (Cordarone), fluconazole (Diflucan), lovastatin (Mevacor), paroxetine (Paxil), zafirlukast (Accolate), and many others.

Here's the gist for atazanavir (Reyataz) and limonene. In this case, limonene is the one being processed by an enzyme called CYP2C9, and atazanavir can slow that enzyme down. So the theoretical concern flips the usual worry: it's the limonene levels that might creep up, not your atazanavir. That could mean a bit more chance of mild limonene-related effects like heartburn or stomach upset.

Honestly, this is very theoretical. It comes only from lab and animal work, has never been reported in real people, and food amounts of citrus are not a concern. If you're using a concentrated limonene supplement, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first, since keeping your HIV treatment steady matters most.

About Atazanavir

What Is Atazanavir Used For?

Brand name: Reyataz

Atazanavir capsules are used together with other antiretroviral medicines to treat HIV-1 infection in adults and in children 6 years and older who weigh at least 15 kg (about 33 lbs).

Reyataz — available as capsules and as an oral powder — is also approved for HIV-1 treatment in adults and in children as young as 3 months who weigh at least 5 kg (about 11 lbs). Reyataz oral powder must always be taken with ritonavir and food, and is not for use in children weighing less than 5 kg.
