Here's the thing to know about pairing masterwort with cyproheptadine (Periactin). Both can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Masterwort contains furanocoumarins, the same family of compounds that cause sun-sensitivity reactions, and cyproheptadine itself is sometimes listed as a drug that can make your skin react more to UV light. Put them together and you may sunburn faster or break out in a rash with less sun than usual.

I'll be honest with you: this concern is theoretical, based on how these compounds behave rather than reports of people actually having problems together. So I wouldn't lose sleep over it, but it makes sense to use sunscreen, cover up outdoors, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Masterwort (Heracleum sphondylium), a plant in the carrot family, has a long folk-medicine history for digestion, nerves, and skin. Modern scientific evidence to support these uses is very limited, and the plant can cause skin reactions to sunlight, so use it cautiously and talk with your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Cyproheptadine Used For?

Brand name: Periactin

Cyproheptadine treats a range of allergic conditions, including perennial and seasonal allergic rhinitis (year-round or seasonal nasal allergies), vasomotor rhinitis (non-allergic nasal symptoms), and allergic conjunctivitis (itchy, watery eyes caused by allergens or foods). It also helps with allergic skin reactions such as urticaria (hives) and angioedema (skin swelling).

Additional uses include cold urticaria (hives triggered by cold), dermatographism (skin that hives when scratched), and helping to calm allergic reactions to blood or plasma transfusions. It is also used as a supportive therapy alongside epinephrine after a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) has been initially controlled.
