Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: this isn't about how your body breaks down Drixoral (dexbrompheniramine with pseudoephedrine). Instead, it's about your skin and the sun. Masterwort contains natural compounds called furanocoumarins that can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, and certain medicines can do the same thing. Stacking the two together may add up, so you could sunburn faster or react more easily after time outdoors.

I'll be honest, this concern is mostly theoretical, based on how these chemicals behave rather than strong patient studies, and photosensitivity is a fairly minor side effect of this cold medicine. Still, if you take both, wear sunscreen and cover up. Check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Dexbrompheniramine, Pseudoephedrine page

“Ephedra is the supplement I would rule out first for anyone taking dexbrompheniramine and pseudoephedrine (Drixoral, Disophrol), an antihistamine and decongestant combination for colds and allergies. Pseudoephedrine already stimulates the heart and raises blood pressure, and stacking a stimulant herb on top accounts for four of the fiv…”

About Masterwort

What is Masterwort?

Masterwort
  • Digestive upset
  • Mild anxiety and tension
  • Skin complaints
  • Respiratory and cough relief
  • Traditional tonic

Masterwort (Heracleum sphondylium), a plant in the carrot family, has a long folk-medicine history for digestion, nerves, and skin. Modern scientific evidence to support these uses is very limited, and the plant can cause skin reactions to sunlight, so use it cautiously and talk with your pharmacist or doctor first.
