Why this applies to Atomoxetine

Atomoxetine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group N,n-dmpea interacts with.

In vitro research shows that N,N-DMPEA strongly inhibits cytochrome P450 2D6 (CYP2D6). Theoretically, concomitant use with drugs metabolized by CYP2D6 might increase the risk for adverse effects from these drugs.
Some drugs metabolized by CYP2D6 include amitriptyline (Elavil), clozapine (Clozaril), codeine, desipramine (Norpramin), donepezil (Aricept), fentanyl (Duragesic), flecainide (Tambocor), fluoxetine (Prozac), meperidine (Demerol), methadone (Dolophine), metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol XL), olanzapine (Zyprexa), ondansetron (Zofran), tramadol (Ultram), trazodone (Desyrel), and others.

Here's the gist for Strattera (atomoxetine): your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP2D6 to break it down and clear it out. In lab testing, N,N-DMPEA appears to strongly block that same enzyme. If it does the same thing in real people, atomoxetine could build up higher than expected, which may mean more of its usual side effects like a faster heartbeat, raised blood pressure, trouble sleeping, dry mouth, decreased appetite, or feeling jittery and nauseated.

I'll be honest, though, this is only a theory right now. It comes from test-tube research, not human studies, and N,N-DMPEA itself is poorly studied. On top of that, it's a stimulant-like ingredient stacked on a drug that already nudges norepinephrine up, so I'd run this by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Atomoxetine — available as capsules (Atomoxetine, Atomoxetine Hydrochloride, Strattera) and as an oral solution (Atomoxetine Hydrochloride, Atoncy) — is approved for the treatment of ADHD in adults and pediatric patients 6 years of age and older. It is meant to be part of a total treatment program that may also include psychological, educational, and social supports.

ADHD is diagnosed when persistent symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity cause meaningful problems in daily life — at school, at work, or at home — in more than one setting. Atomoxetine is not approved to treat major depressive disorder.
