Here's the simple version: Eprosartan (Teveten) lowers your blood pressure by relaxing your blood vessels. Periwinkle contains a compound called vincamine that, at least on paper, may also widen blood vessels and nudge blood pressure down. Stack the two together and the worry is an additive effect, meaning your pressure could dip lower than intended.

If that happens, you might feel dizzy, lightheaded, tired, or wobbly when you stand up too fast. I'll be honest with you though: this concern is theoretical, based on how the plant behaves in lab and animal studies, not strong human proof. Periwinkle can also be toxic in larger doses, so don't start it on your own. Run it by your pharmacist or doctor first, especially if your blood pressure already runs low.

Periwinkle (Vinca minor) is a flowering plant whose alkaloids are the source of vinpocetine, a compound marketed for memory and brain circulation. Evidence in humans is limited and mixed, and the plant contains potent compounds that can be toxic in larger amounts, so it should be used only with professional guidance. A closely related plant, Madagascar periwinkle, is the source of important cancer chemotherapy drugs but is not safe to use as a home remedy.

What Is Eprosartan Used For?

  • Eprosartan is used alone or in combination with other medications to treat high blood pressure. Eprosartan is in a class of medications called angiotensin II receptor antagonists. It works by blocking the action of certain natural substances that tighten the blood vessels, allowing the blood to flow more smoothly and the heart to pump more efficiently.

  • High blood pressure is a common condition, and when not treated it can cause damage to the brain, heart, blood vessels, kidneys, and other parts of the body. Damage to these organs may cause heart disease, a heart attack, heart failure, stroke, kidney failure, loss of vision, and other problems. In addition to taking medication, making lifestyle changes will also help to control your blood pressure. These changes include eating a diet that is low in fat and salt, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising at least 30 minutes most days, not smoking, and using alcohol in moderation.
