Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing about nitroprusside: it's a powerful IV blood pressure medicine, given only in a hospital while your blood pressure is watched very closely. Periwinkle contains vincamine, a compound that may relax and widen blood vessels, which can lower blood pressure on its own. Stacking that on top of nitroprusside could, in theory, push your pressure down too far, leaving you dizzy, lightheaded, weak, or even causing a dangerous drop.

I want to be honest though: this concern is theoretical, based on how these compounds behave rather than real cases in people. In practice, anyone on nitroprusside is in a closely monitored setting, so supplements aren't usually in the picture. Still, always mention any periwinkle product to your medical team so nothing surprises them.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Nitroprusside page

“Nitroprusside (Nitropress) is an IV drip used in the hospital, often in intensive care, to bring dangerously high blood pressure down within minutes, and its interaction list deserves genuine respect. Nearly every entry either adds to the drug's blood-pressure-lowering effect and risks a steep drop, or pushes pressure back up and works…”

About Periwinkle

What is Periwinkle?

  • Memory and cognitive support
  • Circulation problems
  • Dizziness and ringing in the ears
  • Minor wounds and sore throat (traditional)
  • High blood pressure (traditional)

Periwinkle (Vinca minor) is a flowering plant whose alkaloids are the source of vinpocetine, a compound marketed for memory and brain circulation. Evidence in humans is limited and mixed, and the plant contains potent compounds that can be toxic in larger amounts, so it should be used only with professional guidance. A closely related plant, Madagascar periwinkle, is the source of important cancer chemotherapy drugs but is not safe to use as a home remedy.
