Here's the gist: penbutolol (Levatol) is a beta blocker that lowers your blood pressure by slowing your heart and relaxing your vessels. Periwinkle contains a compound called vincamine that may also gently lower blood pressure on its own. Stack the two together and, in theory, they could add up and push your pressure down a little too far.

If that happened, you might feel dizzy, lightheaded, unusually tired, or notice your heartbeat running slow, especially when you stand up quickly. I'll be honest with you though: this concern is based on how these compounds work on paper, not on solid human studies, so it may never amount to much. Still, please loop in your pharmacist or doctor before adding periwinkle, and keep an eye on your blood pressure readings.

Periwinkle (Vinca minor) is a flowering plant whose alkaloids are the source of vinpocetine, a compound marketed for memory and brain circulation. A closely related plant, Madagascar periwinkle, is the source of important cancer chemotherapy drugs but is not safe to use as a home remedy.
