Rooibos + Esomeprazole, Naproxen
Esomeprazole, Naproxen brand name: Vimovo.
Esomeprazole, Naproxen falls into 4 drug categories that Rooibos can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, taking rooibos with CYP2C19 substrates may increase the effects of CYP2C19 substrates.

These two interact in 4 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 4 Interactions?
Rooibos interacts with whole categories of medication. Esomeprazole, Naproxen falls into 4 of those categories, so it can interact with Rooibos in 4 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CYTOCHROME P450 2C19 (CYP2C19) SUBSTRATES
1 of 4Why this applies to Esomeprazole, Naproxen
Esomeprazole, Naproxen falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C19 (CYP2C19) SUBSTRATES — the group Rooibos interacts with.
In vitro research shows that the methanol extract of rooibos leaves and stems strongly inhibits CYP2C19 enzyme activity.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Vimovo combines esomeprazole (a stomach acid reducer) with naproxen (an anti-inflammatory pain reliever). The esomeprazole part is handled by a liver enzyme called CYP2C19, and lab studies hint that rooibos extract may slow that enzyme down. In theory, this could let esomeprazole build up a bit, which usually just means slightly stronger acid suppression, not a dangerous problem.
Here's the reassuring part: this comes only from test-tube research, not real people, so the actual effect in your body is uncertain and likely small. A regular cup or two of rooibos tea is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated rooibos extracts are the bigger question mark. If you're using those, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES
2 of 4Esomeprazole, Naproxen also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research shows that the methanol extract of rooibos leaves and stems inhibits CYP1A2 enzyme activity.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Vimovo combines esomeprazole (a stomach acid reducer) with naproxen (an anti-inflammatory pain reliever). The concern here is purely theoretical. In test-tube studies, rooibos appeared to block an enzyme called CYP1A2, and the worry is that this could slow the breakdown of medicines that rely on it, letting them build up a bit.
In real life, this is a very weak signal. It comes only from lab work, not from people, and neither drug in Vimovo depends mainly on CYP1A2 to clear out. If anything, slightly higher levels could mean more naproxen-type effects like stomach upset or heartburn. Drinking rooibos as a normal tea is unlikely to cause trouble, but check with your pharmacist before using concentrated rooibos extracts.

CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES
3 of 4Esomeprazole, Naproxen also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research shows that the methanol extract of rooibos leaves and stems inhibits CYP2C9 enzyme activity.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Vimovo combines naproxen (an anti-inflammatory pain reliever) with esomeprazole (a stomach acid blocker). The naproxen part is partly cleared by a liver enzyme called CYP2C9. In lab dish studies, a concentrated rooibos extract slowed that enzyme down a bit, which could in theory let naproxen build up slightly and lead to stronger effects or more side effects, things like stomach upset, heartburn, fluid retention, or higher blood pressure.
The key word here is theoretical. This is based only on test-tube research, not on real people. A normal cup or two of rooibos tea is very unlikely to cause any problem. The bigger question would be concentrated rooibos supplements. If you use those regularly, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.
- Fantoukh OI, Dale OR, Parveen A, et al. Safety Assessment of Phytochemicals Derived from the Globalized South African Rooibos Tea (Aspalathus linearis) through Interaction with CYP, PXR, and P-gp. J Agric Food Chem. 2019;67(17):4967-4975.
CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
4 of 4Esomeprazole, Naproxen also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research shows that the methanol extract of rooibos leaves and stems strongly inhibits CYP3A4 enzyme activity.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Vimovo is a combo pill that pairs naproxen (an anti-inflammatory pain reliever) with esomeprazole (a stomach-acid blocker that protects your gut). The idea on file here is that rooibos may gently slow down a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, which can play a small part in clearing these medicines. If that happens, a bit more drug could linger in your body, which in theory might mean more naproxen-type side effects like stomach upset, heartburn, fluid retention, or higher blood pressure.
Honestly though, this is only suggested by lab and test-tube research, not real people, and it leaned on concentrated extracts, not a cup of tea. Drinking rooibos as a beverage is very unlikely to cause trouble. If you use strong rooibos supplements, just mention it to your pharmacist.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Esomeprazole, Naproxen page
“Bleeding risk is the thread running through nearly this whole page. Vimovo pairs naproxen, an anti-inflammatory that already makes stomach bleeding more likely, with esomeprazole on board to shield the gut, and most of the supplements flagged here could push that bleeding risk higher still.”

About Rooibos
What is Rooibos?
- Caffeine-free beverage
- Antioxidant support
- Heart health
- Blood sugar support
- Digestive upset
- General wellness
Rooibos is a caffeine-free herbal tea from South Africa that is rich in antioxidants and generally considered safe as a beverage. While lab and early studies suggest possible benefits for heart health, blood sugar, and inflammation, strong human evidence is lacking for most medical uses. Enjoy it as a tea, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated extracts for health reasons.
