Deutetrabenazine falls under QT INTERVAL-PROLONGING DRUGS — the group Sida Cordifolia interacts with.

Sida cordifolia contains ephedrine. Clinical research shows that ephedrine from another herb, ephedra, can prolong the QT interval.

Here's the concern with pairing Sida cordifolia and your deutetrabenazine (Austedo). This supplement contains ephedrine, a natural stimulant that can stretch out the heart's electrical recovery time (what doctors call QT prolongation). Deutetrabenazine can already nudge the QT interval a bit on its own. Stack the two together and you may get an additive effect, which in rare cases can trigger a dangerous, irregular heartbeat.

You might notice a racing or pounding heart, dizziness, lightheadedness, or even fainting. The evidence here is partly theoretical and borrowed from studies on ephedra, but the risk is real enough that I'd steer clear of combining them. Please don't change your Austedo on your own. Loop in your pharmacist or doctor before adding any ephedrine-containing product.

What Is Deutetrabenazine Used For?

Brand name: Austedo

Deutetrabenazine (brand names Austedo XR and Austedo) is approved for adults to treat two conditions: chorea associated with Huntington's disease (the involuntary, jerky movements caused by Huntington's) and tardive dyskinesia (uncontrolled, repetitive movements that often develop after long-term use of certain psychiatric medications).

Both Austedo XR (extended-release tablet) and Austedo (tablet) are approved for these same uses in adults. The two products differ in their dosing schedule and how they are taken, but both target the same conditions.
