Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to know if you're taking Jardiance (empagliflozin) for your blood sugar. Sida cordifolia naturally contains ephedrine, a stimulant that can actually push blood sugar up. Since your empagliflozin is working to bring sugar levels down, the two are essentially pulling in opposite directions. The worry is that the supplement could blunt how well your medication controls your glucose, so you might see higher readings than expected.

This concern is largely theoretical and based on what we know about ephedrine, not strong studies with empagliflozin itself. Still, I'd be cautious here, partly because Sida also raises heart rate and blood pressure, which isn't ideal for folks managing diabetes and heart health. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

About Sida Cordifolia

What is Sida Cordifolia?

Sida Cordifolia
  • Weight loss and energy
  • Asthma and breathing problems
  • Joint and muscle pain
  • Fever and cough
  • General fatigue or 'tonic'

Sida cordifolia (bala or country mallow) is a traditional Ayurvedic plant that naturally contains ephedrine, a powerful stimulant. Because of this, many supplements containing it have been banned or restricted, and it carries real risks to the heart and blood pressure. There is little reliable human evidence that it works, so most people should avoid it and talk with a pharmacist or doctor first.
