Oral Drugs
Why this applies to Vancomycin
Vancomycin falls under Oral Drugs — the group Thyroid Extract interacts with.
Well-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
Here's the gist for this pairing. When vancomycin is taken by mouth, it's meant to stay in your gut and kill the bacteria causing colitis. It isn't really absorbed into your bloodstream, so it doesn't get tangled up with your thyroid hormones the way absorbed pills can. The interaction on file is about other oral products lowering thyroid extract absorption, which is a minor issue and mostly about timing.
To play it safe, give your thyroid product its own window (an empty stomach, well before food or other medicines) so it absorbs properly. Vancomycin itself won't lose its punch from this. If you're juggling several meds, just ask your pharmacist to help you space them out.

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

About Thyroid Extract
What is Thyroid Extract?
- Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid)
- Fatigue and low energy
- Weight management
- Sluggish metabolism
- General thyroid support
Thyroid extract supplements are made from dried animal thyroid gland and may contain real thyroid hormones (T3 and T4), but the amounts in over-the-counter products are not standardized and can be unpredictable. Self-treating a thyroid problem with these supplements can be risky, so always work with a doctor or pharmacist and use prescription thyroid medicine when treatment is needed.
About Vancomycin
What Is Vancomycin Used For?
Brand names: Vancocin, Vancoled
Vancomycin is an antibiotic. How it is used depends on the product and the route (IV or by mouth).
Intravenous (IV) vancomycin treats septicemia (bloodstream infection), infective endocarditis (heart valve infection), skin and skin structure infections, bone infections, and lower respiratory tract infections. Tyzavan is an IV injection with these same uses. Oral vancomycin (capsules such as Vancocin, and oral solution) treats Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea and enterocolitis caused by Staphylococcus aureus, including methicillin-resistant strains.
IV vancomycin is not approved for C. difficile diarrhea, and oral vancomycin does not work for other types of infection. It should only be used for infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be bacterial.
