Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CNS DEPRESSANTS
Why this applies to Butabarbital Sodium
Butabarbital Sodium falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Tianeptine interacts with.
Higher doses of tianeptine have opioid like effects and may have additive effects with other sedative drugs. In one case report, a 42-year-old male presented with respiratory depression and aspiration pneumonia due to concomitant use of high-dose tianeptine and alprazolam.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the concern with pairing these two: butabarbital is a barbiturate, a strong central nervous system depressant that slows your breathing, relaxes you, and makes you sleepy. Tianeptine, especially at the high doses found in those over-the-counter 'gas station' products, can act like an opioid and also press the brakes on your nervous system. Stack those two together and the sedation can pile up.
What that could look like in real life is heavy drowsiness, slurred speech, confusion, and most worrisome, dangerously slow or shallow breathing. There's even a reported case where high-dose tianeptine plus a sedative led to respiratory depression. This warning is based mostly on how these drugs work rather than large studies, but the risk is real enough that I'd urge you to talk with your doctor or pharmacist before combining them.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Butabarbital Sodium page
“Butabarbital sodium (Butisol Sodium) is a barbiturate, an older sedative prescribed for sleep and anxiety, and this class of drug leaves little margin once sedation stacks, so its list of 97 interacting supplements deserves genuine respect. The dominant theme, covering 78 of the ingredients, is added nervous system depression: anything…”

About Tianeptine
What is Tianeptine?
- Depression (prescription use in some countries)
- Anxiety
- Mood enhancement
- Pain relief
- Self-treatment of opioid withdrawal
- Recreational euphoria
Tianeptine is a prescription antidepressant in some countries, but it is NOT approved by the FDA in the United States and is illegally sold in dietary supplements and 'gas station' products. At high doses it acts like an opioid and carries serious risks of addiction, overdose, and dangerous withdrawal. We strongly advise against using over-the-counter tianeptine products and urge anyone considering it to talk with a doctor or pharmacist first.
