Doxepin falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Tianeptine interacts with.

Tianeptine has sedative effects; high doses may have additive effects with other CNS depressants.
Higher doses of tianeptine have opioid like effects and may have additive effects with other sedative drugs. In one case report, a 42-year-old male presented with respiratory depression and aspiration pneumonia due to concomitant use of high-dose tianeptine and alprazolam.

Here's the simple version: doxepin already has a strong calming, drowsy effect, which is exactly why low doses are used to help people stay asleep. Tianeptine, especially at the higher doses found in those gas station products, can act like an opioid and pile sedation on top. Put the two together and you may get more than you bargained for: heavy grogginess, dizziness, confusion, and in a worst case, slowed or shallow breathing. There's a real case where someone mixing high-dose tianeptine with a sedative ended up with dangerous breathing problems.

This concern comes from how these drugs behave rather than big studies, so it's more theoretical, but I'd still take it seriously. Doxepin isn't a prodrug, so the worry is simply additive sedation. Please talk with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, and know we don't recommend over-the-counter tianeptine at all.
