Melphalan falls under ALKYLATING AGENTS — the group Turmeric interacts with.

Turmeric has antioxidant effects. Theoretically, this may reduce the activity of chemotherapy drugs that generate free radicals. However, research is conflicting.
In vitro research suggests that curcumin, a constituent of turmeric, inhibits mechlorethamine-induced apoptosis of breast cancer cells by up to 70%. Also, animal research shows that curcumin inhibits cyclophosphamide-induced tumor regression. However, some in vitro research shows that curcumin does not affect the apoptosis capacity of etoposide. Also, other laboratory research suggests that curcumin might augment the cytotoxic effects of alkylating agents. Reasons for the discrepancies may relate to the dose of curcumin and the specific chemotherapeutic agent. Lower doses of curcumin might have antioxidant effects while higher doses might have pro-oxidant effects. More evidence is needed to determine what effect, if any, turmeric might have on alkylating agents.

Here's the thinking behind this one. Melphalan is a chemotherapy drug that works partly by causing oxidative stress to damage cancer cells. Turmeric (really its curcumin) is an antioxidant, so in theory it could blunt some of that damage and make your treatment work less well. But honestly, the science here is shaky and contradictory. Some lab studies hint curcumin protects cancer cells, others suggest it actually boosts the killing effect, and the result seems to depend heavily on dose. None of this is proven in real patients.

So I wouldn't panic, but I also wouldn't add concentrated turmeric capsules on my own while on melphalan. The amount you'd get from cooking with the spice is very unlikely to matter. Please run any turmeric supplement past your oncologist or pharmacist first.

About Melphalan

What Is Melphalan Used For?

Brand names: Alkeran, Hepzato

Melphalan is used to treat multiple myeloma, a cancer of plasma cells in the bone marrow. Different products are approved for different roles in that treatment.

Evomela (intravenous injection) is used as a high-dose conditioning treatment — meaning it prepares the body before a stem cell transplant. Ivra (intravenous injection) is used for palliative treatment of multiple myeloma in patients for whom oral therapy is not appropriate. Oral melphalan (Alkeran tablet) is also used for palliative treatment of multiple myeloma.
