Turmeric + Simvastatin, Sitagliptin
Simvastatin, Sitagliptin brand name: Juvisync.
Simvastatin, Sitagliptin falls into 4 drug categories that Turmeric can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, turmeric might increase the risk of liver damage when taken with hepatotoxic drugs.

These two interact in 4 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 4 Interactions?
Turmeric interacts with whole categories of medication. Simvastatin, Sitagliptin falls into 4 of those categories, so it can interact with Turmeric in 4 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS
1 of 4Why this applies to Simvastatin, Sitagliptin
Simvastatin, Sitagliptin falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Turmeric interacts with.
There is concern that turmeric might cause hepatotoxicity, especially when highly bioavailable formulations are used in high doses.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Juvisync combines two medicines: simvastatin (a cholesterol-lowering statin) and sitagliptin (a diabetes drug). The thing worth knowing here is about your liver. Statins like simvastatin can occasionally raise liver enzymes, and there have been scattered reports that concentrated turmeric or curcumin products, especially the high-dose, 'highly absorbable' formulas, may stress the liver too. Stacking both could, in theory, add to that risk.
To be fair, this is based on weak, anecdotal evidence, not strong studies. Turmeric used as a spice in cooking is very unlikely to be a problem. The caution really applies to potent supplement capsules. If you take Juvisync and want to use turmeric supplements, check with your pharmacist or doctor first so your liver can be monitored.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
2 of 4Simvastatin, Sitagliptin also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro and animal research show that turmeric and its constituents curcumin and curcuminoids inhibit CYP3A4. Also, 8 case reports from the World Health Organization (WHO) adverse drug reaction database describe increased toxicity in patients taking turmeric and cancer medications that are CYP3A4 substrates, including everolimus, ruxolitinib, ibrutinib, and palbociclib, and bortezomib. In another case report, a transplant patient presented with acute nephrotoxicity and elevated tacrolimus levels after consuming turmeric powder at a dose of 15 or more spoonfuls daily for ten days prior. It was thought that turmeric increased levels of tacrolimus due to CYP3A4 inhibition.
Conversely, other in vitro research suggests that turmeric induces CYP3A4 activity, leading to reduced levels of CYP3A4 substrates. An animal model suggests that induction of CYP3A4 occurs after daily curcumin use for 1 week. However, the induction of CYP3A4 by turmeric has not been reported in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Juvisync combines two medicines, and the one that matters here is simvastatin. Your body relies on an enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear simvastatin out. Turmeric, in lab and animal studies, seems to slow that enzyme down. If that happens in people, simvastatin could build up a bit higher than usual, which can raise the chance of muscle aches, weakness, or in rare cases more serious muscle problems. The sitagliptin half isn't really affected by this pathway.
Here's the honest part: this concern comes mostly from test tube and animal research, not solid human data, and everyday cooking amounts of turmeric are unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated curcumin supplements are the bigger question. Before starting one, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on you.

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS
3 of 4Simvastatin, Sitagliptin also falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS.
Animal research and case reports suggest that curcumin, a turmeric constituent, can reduce blood glucose levels in patients with diabetes. Furthermore, clinical research in adults with type 2 diabetes shows that taking curcumin 475 mg daily for 10 days prior to taking glyburide 5 mg decreased postprandial glucose levels for up to 24 hours when compared with glyburide alone, despite the lack of a significant pharmacokinetic interaction. Other clinical studies in patients with diabetes show that taking curcumin daily can reduce blood glucose levels when compared with placebo.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Juvisync is a combination pill containing sitagliptin (which helps your body lower blood sugar) and simvastatin (a cholesterol medicine). The piece that matters here is the sitagliptin. Some studies and animal research suggest curcumin, the active part of turmeric, can gently nudge blood sugar down on its own. When you add that to a diabetes medicine, the two effects could stack up and push your sugar a little too low.
In real life, low blood sugar can feel like shakiness, sweating, dizziness, or sudden hunger. The evidence here is fairly weak, and small culinary amounts of turmeric in food are unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated curcumin capsules are the bigger question. If you want to try one, please check with your pharmacist or doctor first and keep an eye on your readings.

ORGANIC ANION-TRANSPORTING POLYPEPTIDE SUBSTRATES (OATP)
4 of 4Simvastatin, Sitagliptin also falls under ORGANIC ANION-TRANSPORTING POLYPEPTIDE SUBSTRATES (OATP).
In vitro research shows that the turmeric constituent curcumin competitively inhibits OATP4C1 transport. This transporter is expressed in the kidney and facilitates the renal excretion of certain drugs. Theoretically, taking turmeric might decrease renal excretion of OATP substrates.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Juvisync combines two medicines: simvastatin (a cholesterol drug) and sitagliptin (a diabetes drug). The concern here is mostly about sitagliptin, which your kidneys clear out using transport proteins. Lab studies suggest curcumin, the active part of turmeric, may slow one of these kidney transporters. In theory, that could let a bit more sitagliptin build up, which might mean a slightly higher chance of low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, dizziness).
I want to be honest: this is based only on test-tube research, not real people, so it's quite uncertain. A sprinkle of turmeric in your cooking is very unlikely to matter. If you're considering concentrated curcumin capsules, just check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Turmeric
What is Turmeric?
- Joint pain and arthritis
- Inflammation
- Digestive upset
- Antioxidant support
- Skin conditions
Turmeric is a popular spice whose main active compounds, curcuminoids, are studied mostly for inflammation and joint pain. Some research is promising, but quality is mixed and curcumin is poorly absorbed on its own. For most people, dietary amounts are safe, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before taking concentrated supplements, especially if you are pregnant, nursing, or have a medical condition.
