Why this applies to Tigecycline

Tigecycline falls under ANTITUMOR ANTIBIOTICS — the group Turmeric interacts with.

Turmeric has antioxidant effects. Theoretically, this may reduce the activity of chemotherapy drugs that generate free radicals. However, research is conflicting.
In vitro and animal research shows that curcumin, a constituent of turmeric, inhibits doxorubicin-induced apoptosis of breast cancer cells by up to 65%. However, curcumin does not seem to affect the apoptosis capacity of daunorubicin. In fact, some research shows that curcumin might augment the cytotoxic effects of antitumor antibiotics, increasing their effectiveness. Reasons for the discrepancies may relate to the dose of curcumin and the chemotherapeutic agent. Lower doses of curcumin might have antioxidant effects while higher doses might have pro-oxidant effects. More evidence is needed to determine what effects, if any, antioxidants such as turmeric have on antitumor antibiotics.

Here's something worth clearing up. The interaction we have on file for turmeric was really written about the antitumor antibiotics (think cancer chemo drugs like doxorubicin), where turmeric's antioxidant activity might, in theory, blunt how those drugs work. Tigecycline (Tygacil) happens to share the word "antibiotic," but it's a completely different animal. It's a tetracycline-type antibiotic used to fight bacterial infections, and it does not rely on creating free radicals to do its job.

So this particular concern really doesn't translate to tigecycline. On top of that, the evidence behind it is weak (lab and animal data only) and even conflicting. Tigecycline is also given in the hospital by IV, so day-to-day turmeric in food isn't a realistic worry here. Still, it's always smart to tell your care team about any supplements you take.

What Is Tigecycline Injection Used For?

Brand name: Tygacil

Tygacil (tigecycline for injection) is approved for adults 18 and older to treat three types of serious bacterial infections: complicated skin and skin structure infections, complicated intra-abdominal (stomach and intestinal) infections, and community-acquired bacterial pneumonia (pneumonia caught outside a hospital).

It is not approved for diabetic foot infections or for pneumonia caught in a hospital setting, including ventilator-associated pneumonia — clinical trials showed it did not work well enough for those uses and was associated with higher mortality in patients with ventilator-associated pneumonia.
