Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the idea with Orencia (abatacept): this medicine works by calming down an overactive immune system, which is how it eases the joint pain, swelling, and stiffness of rheumatoid arthritis. Umckaloabo, on the other hand, has shown immune-boosting activity in lab dishes. So in theory, the supplement could nudge your immune system in the opposite direction and make abatacept work a little less well, which might mean your joint symptoms aren't as well controlled.

I want to be honest that this is a theoretical concern based on test-tube studies, not real cases in people, so it may not amount to much in practice. Still, since abatacept lowers your defenses on purpose, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding Umckaloabo rather than starting or stopping anything on your own.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the abatacept page

“Abatacept (Orencia) treats rheumatoid arthritis and related conditions by dialing down immune activity, so the supplements that matter here are the ones pulling in the opposite direction. All 53 ingredients on this list share that single theme: herbs and mushrooms with immune-stimulating properties, echinacea, ashwagandha, and astragal…”

About Umckaloabo

What is Umckaloabo?

Umckaloabo
  • Acute bronchitis
  • Common cold
  • Sinusitis
  • Sore throat
  • Upper respiratory infections

Umckaloabo is a root extract from a South African geranium that is most studied for short-term relief of acute bronchitis and other respiratory infections. Some clinical research suggests it may help symptoms resolve a bit faster, but the quality of evidence is mixed and it is not a cure. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a chronic illness.
