Here's the thinking with Umckaloabo (Pelargonium sidoides) and cisplatin. Lab studies suggest this root extract can gently nudge the immune system to be more active. Cisplatin works partly by suppressing fast-growing cells and is often grouped with immune-affecting cancer drugs, so the worry is that an immune-stimulating herb could, in theory, work against what your treatment is trying to do.

I want to be straight with you: this is a theoretical concern based on test-tube data, not on real patients taking both together. We don't have proof it actually weakens cisplatin. Still, cancer treatment isn't the place to take chances. Before adding Umckaloabo or any supplement during chemotherapy, please run it by your oncology team or pharmacist first.

Umckaloabo is a root extract from a South African geranium that is most studied for short-term relief of acute bronchitis and other respiratory infections. Some clinical research suggests it may help symptoms resolve a bit faster, but the quality of evidence is mixed and it is not a cure. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a chronic illness.

About Cisplatin Injection

What Is Cisplatin Injection Used For?

Brand name: Platinol-AQ

Cisplatin Injection is used to treat three types of cancer. For metastatic testicular tumors and metastatic ovarian tumors, it is used as part of combination chemotherapy — alongside other approved cancer medicines — in patients who have already had surgery and/or radiation therapy. For metastatic ovarian tumors, it can also be used alone as a second-line treatment when standard chemotherapy has stopped working and cisplatin has not been tried before.

For advanced bladder cancer (specifically transitional cell bladder cancer) that can no longer be treated with surgery or radiation, Cisplatin Injection is used as a single agent.
