Vinpocetine in Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Pregnancy Possibly Unsafe

When used orally. In June 2019, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a statement of warning that those who are pregnant or who could become pregnant should avoid vinpocetine. In rats, vinpocetine has been associated with an increased risk of miscarriage at a dose of 60 mg/kg daily and with reduced fetal weight and increased incidence of birth defects at a dose of 5-20 mg/kg. Based on pharmacokinetic analyses, a daily vinpocetine dose of 10 mg in humans is comparable to a daily dose of 5 mg/kg in rats.

Some Naloxegol Products Have a Food Rule — Vinpocetine Should Not Break It

At least one FDA label for a product containing Naloxegol says to take it on an empty stomach. Most supplements — Vinpocetine included — are taken with a meal, so the easy mistake is swallowing both together at breakfast. Where that rule applies, keep Naloxegol on its own and move Vinpocetine to a meal later in the day.

This may not be true of your version. Food instructions belong to the product, not the ingredient: two Naloxegol products can carry different directions, and extended-release forms often differ from immediate-release ones. The label we read is quoted below — check the directions on your own box or bottle, or ask your pharmacist, for how to take the exact product you were given.

What Is Naloxegol Used For?

Brand name: Movantik

Movantik (naloxegol) is used to treat opioid-induced constipation (OIC) — constipation caused by opioid pain medications — in adults who have chronic non-cancer pain. It is also approved for adults with chronic pain related to prior cancer or its treatment, as long as they don't need frequent (roughly weekly) increases in their opioid dose.

It is not indicated for constipation from other causes, and it is not approved for use in children.
