What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: L-glutamine, an amino acid your body naturally produces. L-glutamine serves as a building block for protein and is used by your cells for energy and repair, especially during stress, illness, or recovery from surgery.
The tablet also contains several inactive ingredients—microcrystalline cellulose, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, cellulose, magnesium stearate, stearic acid, and croscarmellose sodium—which are standard binders and fillers that help hold the tablet together and aid absorption.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
L-glutamine is rated Effective for sickle cell disease. For HIV/AIDS-related wasting, postoperative recovery, and critical illness from trauma, the evidence supports that it is Possibly Effective—meaning the science suggests benefit, but more research would strengthen confidence.
The data we hold covers these specific uses. If you're considering L-glutamine for another purpose, that evidence isn't on file here.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-glutamine is generally well tolerated in healthy adults. The most common side effects are gastrointestinal: belching, bloating, flatulence, nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, and stomach pain.
Some people report headache or muscle pain. At higher doses (10–30 grams daily), GI side effects are more likely.
A small number of patients with bipolar disorder have reported mood changes (mania or hypomania) while taking glutamine; dizziness has also been documented but resolved when the dose was lowered. If you have kidney or liver disease, use L-glutamine only under medical supervision.
The safety data during pregnancy is rated Likely Safe, but safety information for breastfeeding is limited—talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking a supplement dose while nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take anticonvulsant medications (seizure drugs), check your exact medication list with the tool on this page and confirm with your doctor or pharmacist before adding L-glutamine. No other medication interactions are documented for this ingredient in our data.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
L-glutamine may help with sickle cell disease or recovery from surgery or critical illness. If you take anticonvulsant medication, check with your doctor or pharmacist first—the supplement may theoretically interfere with seizure control.
Gastrointestinal side effects are common, especially at higher doses. Anyone with kidney or liver disease should discuss it with their healthcare provider before starting.

L-Glutamine 1000 mg by Jarrow Formulas Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Jarrow Formulas L-Glutamine 1000 mg has one documented interaction: through its L-glutamine content, it may theoretically reduce how well anticonvulsant medications (seizure drugs) work.
L-glutamine breaks down into glutamate, an excitatory brain chemical that could work against anticonvulsants—but this hasn't been reported in actual patients yet, only studied in theory.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Although the interaction is theoretical rather than confirmed in people taking the supplement, anticonvulsant drugs are critical for seizure control. Altogether, these interactions span 50 individual medications.
If you take any anticonvulsant medication, check your exact drug list with the tool on this page before starting L-glutamine, and talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist.
