Propolis is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth or applied to skin in the short term. The most common side effect from oral use is headache; in one trial, about 7% of people taking 250 mg twice daily for 4 months reported mild headache.

Topically, it can cause contact dermatitis or allergic cheilitis (swelling or irritation of the lips) in sensitive people. Allergic reactions are possible, especially if you're sensitive to bee products — rarely, severe allergic reactions can occur.

Propolis is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding due to insufficient safety data, though it's rated possibly safe while breastfeeding.

Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs

Theoretically, propolis might increase the risk of bleeding when taken with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs.
In vitro research shows that propolis water extract and the propolis constituent, caffeic acid phenethyl ester, can inhibit platelet aggregation. Additionally, evidence from an animal model shows that taking propolis in addition to warfarin decreases INR, suggesting that propolis can decrease the effectiveness of warfarin.
