Red propolis is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth in the short term, though allergic reactions are possible, especially if you're sensitive to bee products. The most common side effect in trials is mild headache — around 7% of people taking 250 mg twice daily for four months reported it.

Topically, it can cause contact dermatitis or allergic reactions in sensitive skin. There isn't enough reliable safety data to use red propolis during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

Theoretically, propolis might increase the risk of bleeding when taken with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs.
In vitro research shows that propolis water extract and the propolis constituent, caffeic acid phenethyl ester, can inhibit platelet aggregation. Additionally, evidence from an animal model shows that taking propolis in addition to warfarin decreases INR, suggesting that propolis can decrease the effectiveness of warfarin.
