Adrafinil and Penbutolol Sulfate

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

Why this applies to Penbutolol Sulfate

Penbutolol Sulfate falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Adrafinil interacts with.

Theoretically, adrafinil might reduce the effects of antihypertensive drugs.
Adrafinil is a precursor to the stimulant prescription drug modafinil. Modafinil has been shown to increase diastolic and systolic blood pressure. Retrospective analyses show that patients taking modafinil had a small but increased rate of requiring new antihypertensive drugs or increased use of antihypertensive drugs when compared with placebo.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to keep in mind if you take penbutolol (Levatol) for blood pressure and you're considering adrafinil. Your liver turns adrafinil into modafinil, a wakefulness-promoting drug that can nudge both your top and bottom blood pressure numbers upward. Since penbutolol works to lower your pressure and slow your heart rate, adrafinil may push in the opposite direction and partly blunt the benefit you get from it.

This is a theoretical concern based on how these drugs behave, not something proven in head-to-head studies, so I wouldn't panic. Still, if you add adrafinil, your readings could creep up. Please check in with your doctor or pharmacist before combining them, and keep an eye on your home blood pressure.
