Some Amiodarone Products Have a Food Rule — Andrographis Should Not Break It

At least one FDA label for a product containing Amiodarone says to take it with food. If you take Andrographis on an empty stomach out of habit, keep them separate — and take Amiodarone with a meal where the label says to.

This may not be true of your version. Food instructions belong to the product, not the ingredient: two Amiodarone products can carry different directions, and extended-release forms often differ from immediate-release ones. The label we read is quoted below — check the directions on your own box or bottle, or ask your pharmacist, for how to take the exact product you were given.

Administration of amiodarone hydrochloride tablets in divided doses with meals is suggested for total daily doses of 1000 mg or higher, or when gastrointestinal intolerance occurs.

What Is Amiodarone Used For?

Brand names: Pacerone, Cordarone

Amiodarone is prescribed for adults with serious, life-threatening heart-rhythm problems that haven't responded to other medications. Specifically, it's used for two dangerous arrhythmias (abnormal heartbeats): recurrent ventricular fibrillation (a chaotic, potentially fatal heart rhythm) and recurrent ventricular tachycardia (a dangerously fast heart rhythm that causes unstable blood pressure).

Because amiodarone comes with significant risks, doctors reserve it for situations where other options haven't worked or can't be tolerated. It is not a first-choice medication — it's a last-resort tool for serious, life-threatening conditions.
