Here's the idea behind this pairing. Etanercept (Enbrel) works by calming down an overactive immune system, which is exactly what you want when you're treating rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, or juvenile arthritis. Andrographis seems to do the opposite in lab studies, where its main compounds (andrographolides) appear to rev up the immune response a bit. If that holds true in people, it could theoretically work against what Enbrel is trying to do, possibly leaving you with more joint pain, swelling, or stiffness.

I want to be honest: this is based only on test-tube and animal research, not real-world cases, so it may not amount to much. Still, since the two pull in opposite directions, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or rheumatologist before adding it. Please don't stop or change your Enbrel on your own.

What Is Etanercept Injection Used For?

Brand name: Enbrel

Enbrel (etanercept) injection is approved to treat several inflammatory conditions. In adults, it is used for moderately to severely active rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and chronic moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis.

In children, Enbrel is approved for polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis and juvenile psoriatic arthritis in patients 2 years and older, and for chronic moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis in patients 4 years and older.
