Ashwagandha and Caffeine , Sodium Benzoate

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Ashwagandha interacts with whole categories of medication. Caffeine , Sodium Benzoate falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Ashwagandha in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Minor).

Minor

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES

1 of 2

Why this applies to Caffeine , Sodium Benzoate

Caffeine , Sodium Benzoate falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Ashwagandha interacts with.

Theoretically, ashwagandha might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research shows that ashwagandha extract induces CYP1A2 enzymes.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Here's the simple version. Caffeine (the active part of Caffeine and Sodium Benzoate) is cleared from your body mainly by a liver enzyme called CYP1A2. Lab studies hint that ashwagandha may speed up that enzyme. If that happened in real life, your body could break down caffeine a bit faster, meaning you might feel less of its usual kick, less alertness, less of that wake-up boost.

Honestly, I wouldn't lose sleep over this one. The evidence is only from test-tube and animal research, the rating is minor, and any real effect in people is uncertain. There's no danger here, just a chance the caffeine works a little less. If you take both regularly and notice a difference, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

Caffeine , Sodium Benzoate also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, ashwagandha might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.

Here's the gist for the caffeine in this product. Lab studies hint that ashwagandha might speed up a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, which helps clear certain drugs from your body. If that happened with caffeine, your body could process it a bit faster, meaning the pick-me-up effect (more alertness, less drowsiness) might wear off sooner or feel weaker.

Honestly, though, I wouldn't lose sleep over this one. The evidence is only from test-tube and animal work, not from real people, and the interaction is rated as minor. Most folks won't notice anything. If you take both regularly and feel the caffeine isn't doing much, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can take a closer look.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Caffeine , Sodium Benzoate page

“Caffeine and sodium benzoate is itself a stimulant medication, so the supplements most likely to cause trouble are the ones doing the same job. Seven of the 208 ingredients on file rate major, several of them stimulant herbs such as ephedra that can pile extra blood pressure and heart strain onto a drug already revving the nervous system.”
