Ashwagandha and Oxazepam

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Ashwagandha interacts with whole categories of medication. Oxazepam falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Ashwagandha in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

CNS DEPRESSANTS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Oxazepam

Oxazepam falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Ashwagandha interacts with.

Theoretically, taking ashwagandha might increase the sedative effects of CNS depressants.
Ashwagandha seems to have sedative effects. Theoretically, this may potentiate the effects of barbiturates, other sedatives, and anxiolytics.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to keep in mind with this pair. Oxazepam (Serax) already calms down brain activity to ease anxiety, and ashwagandha appears to have its own mild sedating, calming effect. Stack the two together and those effects could add up. That might leave you feeling more drowsy, foggy, or unsteady than oxazepam would cause on its own, with a bit more risk of things like dizziness or stumbling, especially in older folks.

I want to be honest about the evidence here: this concern is theoretical, based on how each one behaves, not on solid studies showing real harm. It isn't about ashwagandha changing how your body clears oxazepam. Still, before you combine them, run it by your pharmacist or doctor so they can weigh in for your situation.

BENZODIAZEPINES

2 of 2

Oxazepam also falls under BENZODIAZEPINES.

Theoretically, taking ashwagandha might increase the sedative effects of benzodiazepines.
There is preliminary evidence that ashwagandha might have an additive effect with diazepam (Valium) and clonazepam (Klonopin). This may also occur with other benzodiazepines.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist: oxazepam already calms the brain and can leave you feeling drowsy, foggy, or relaxed to the point of sleepiness. Ashwagandha is taken mostly to ease stress and help with sleep, so it tends to pull in the same direction. Stack the two and those calming effects may simply add up, which could mean more daytime drowsiness, dizziness, slower thinking, or feeling unsteady on your feet.

I want to be honest about the evidence here. This is a theoretical concern based on how each one behaves, not on solid studies with oxazepam itself. For many people it may be a non-issue, but it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, especially if you drive, take other sedatives, or are older.
