These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Bacopa interacts with whole categories of medication. Carbetapentane, Chlorpheniramine, Phenylephrine falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Bacopa in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
1 of 2Why this applies to Carbetapentane, Chlorpheniramine, Phenylephrine
Carbetapentane, Chlorpheniramine, Phenylephrine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Bacopa interacts with.
Research on the effects of bacopa extracts on CYP3A4 enzymes is conflicting. Some in vitro evidence suggests that bacopa extract can moderately and competitively inhibit CYP3A4, while other in vitro evidence suggests that any effect is unlikely to be clinically significant.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
This combination cough and cold product contains a cough suppressant (carbetapentane), an antihistamine (chlorpheniramine), and a decongestant (phenylephrine). Some of these ingredients are partly broken down by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In lab dishes, bacopa has shown a mild ability to slow that enzyme down, though other lab work suggests the effect may be too small to matter in real life. So this is a theoretical concern, not something proven in people.
If bacopa did slow the breakdown, levels of these ingredients could run a little higher, which in theory means more drowsiness, dry mouth, dizziness, or a jittery, racing-heart feeling from the decongestant. The evidence here is weak, so I wouldn't panic. Still, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them.

ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS
2 of 2Carbetapentane, Chlorpheniramine, Phenylephrine also falls under ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS.
Bacopa seems to inhibit acetylcholinesterase and might increase acetylcholine levels, which could counteract the effects of anticholinergic drugs. Similarly, anticholinergic drugs might counteract the cholinergic effects of bacopa.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version. One ingredient in your Ricotuss, chlorpheniramine, is an antihistamine that works partly by blocking a brain chemical called acetylcholine. Bacopa appears to do the opposite in lab studies: it may nudge acetylcholine levels up. So in theory, the two could partly cancel each other out. Bacopa might slightly blunt the cold-and-cough relief you're after, and the antihistamine might dull whatever memory benefit you take bacopa for.
I want to be honest with you though: this is a theoretical concern based on how each works, not something proven in people, and it's rated mild. I wouldn't lose sleep over it. If you notice your medicine isn't working as well, just check in with your pharmacist or doctor.

About Bacopa
What is Bacopa?
- Memory and cognitive support
- Anxiety and stress
- ADHD symptoms
- Age-related memory decline
- General brain health
Bacopa is an Ayurvedic herb most often used for memory and thinking. Some small studies suggest it may modestly help memory when taken regularly for several weeks, but the evidence is limited and quality varies. It is generally well tolerated but can cause stomach upset, and it should be avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding due to a lack of safety data.
