These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Bacopa interacts with whole categories of medication. Chlorpheniramine, Hydrocodone, Pseudoephedrine falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Bacopa in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
1 of 2Why this applies to Chlorpheniramine, Hydrocodone, Pseudoephedrine
Chlorpheniramine, Hydrocodone, Pseudoephedrine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Bacopa interacts with.
Research on the effects of bacopa extracts on CYP3A4 enzymes is conflicting. Some in vitro evidence suggests that bacopa extract can moderately and competitively inhibit CYP3A4, while other in vitro evidence suggests that any effect is unlikely to be clinically significant.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
This combination product (Tussend) pairs an antihistamine, a cough-suppressing opioid, and a decongestant. The piece that matters here is the hydrocodone, which your liver partly handles through an enzyme called CYP3A4. In test-tube studies, bacopa may slow that enzyme a bit. If it does, hydrocodone could linger longer and feel stronger, meaning more drowsiness, dizziness, constipation, or slowed breathing. The antihistamine adds its own sleepiness on top of that.
That said, the lab evidence is mixed and only theoretical, so this may not amount to much in real life. Still, if you take bacopa regularly and notice extra grogginess, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS
2 of 2Chlorpheniramine, Hydrocodone, Pseudoephedrine also falls under ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS.
Bacopa seems to inhibit acetylcholinesterase and might increase acetylcholine levels, which could counteract the effects of anticholinergic drugs. Similarly, anticholinergic drugs might counteract the cholinergic effects of bacopa.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
The piece of your Tussend combo I want to focus on here is the chlorpheniramine, the antihistamine. It works partly by blocking acetylcholine, one of the brain and body's chemical messengers. Bacopa seems to nudge things in the opposite direction by raising acetylcholine levels. So in theory, the two could partly cancel each other out, meaning the chlorpheniramine might not dry up a runny nose or calm sneezing quite as well, and bacopa's memory effect could be blunted too.
I want to be honest that this is a theoretical concern based on how these work in the lab, not something well documented in real patients. It's likely minor for most people. Still, if you notice your cold symptoms aren't easing as expected, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

About Bacopa
What is Bacopa?
- Memory and cognitive support
- Anxiety and stress
- ADHD symptoms
- Age-related memory decline
- General brain health
Bacopa is an Ayurvedic herb most often used for memory and thinking. Some small studies suggest it may modestly help memory when taken regularly for several weeks, but the evidence is limited and quality varies. It is generally well tolerated but can cause stomach upset, and it should be avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding due to a lack of safety data.
