Bacopa and Tasimelteon

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Bacopa interacts with whole categories of medication. Tasimelteon falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Bacopa in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES

1 of 2

Why this applies to Tasimelteon

Tasimelteon falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Bacopa interacts with.

Theoretically, bacopa might increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
Research on the effects of bacopa extracts on CYP1A2 enzymes is conflicting. Some in vitro evidence shows that bacopa extract can moderately and non-competitively inhibit CYP1A2, while other in vitro evidence suggests that any effect is unlikely to be clinically significant.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist: your body clears tasimelteon partly through a liver enzyme called CYP1A2. In some lab dish studies, bacopa seemed to slow that same enzyme down a little. If that were to happen in real life, tasimelteon could hang around longer than usual, which might make its effects stronger. With a sleep medication like Hetlioz, that could mean more next-day grogginess, drowsiness, or feeling out of it.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. This is only a theoretical concern based on test-tube research, and even those studies disagree with each other. It hasn't been shown to cause real problems in people. Still, since both can affect sleep and alertness, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

2 of 2

Tasimelteon also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, bacopa might increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
Research on the effects of bacopa extracts on CYP3A4 enzymes is conflicting. Some in vitro evidence suggests that bacopa extract can moderately and competitively inhibit CYP3A4, while other in vitro evidence suggests that any effect is unlikely to be clinically significant.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist: your body clears tasimelteon largely through a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In some test-tube studies, bacopa appears to slow that same enzyme down a bit. If that happened in a person, tasimelteon could linger longer than usual, which might mean stronger or longer-lasting effects like next-morning grogginess, drowsiness, or odd dreams.

I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is, though. The lab findings actually conflict, and some suggest bacopa wouldn't matter much at all. There are no real human reports here, so this is more theoretical than proven. Still, since both can affect sleep, it's worth a quick word with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them, especially if you notice extra sleepiness.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

Bacopa is an Ayurvedic herb most often used for memory and thinking.
