Captopril, Hydrochlorothiazide falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Betony interacts with.

Theoretically, betony might have additive effects with blood pressure lowering drugs due to hypotensive activity of the glycosides found in betony. It might also interfere with the activity of pressor drugs. Some antihypertensive drugs include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), Amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDiuril), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.

Your Capozide already does two jobs: captopril relaxes blood vessels and hydrochlorothiazide helps your body shed extra fluid, and together they bring your blood pressure down. The thinking here is that betony may have a mild blood-pressure-lowering effect of its own. Stacked on top of your medication, that could nudge your pressure a little lower than expected.

If that happened, you might feel dizzy or lightheaded, especially when standing up quickly, or just unusually tired. Keep in mind this is a theoretical concern based on betony's chemistry, not solid human studies, so for most people it likely won't cause trouble. Still, if you'd like to try betony, check with your pharmacist or doctor first, and keep an eye on your home blood pressure readings.

What Is Captopril and Hydrochlorothiazide Used For?

Brand names: Capozide, Acezide

Captopril and hydrochlorothiazide tablets are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). The two ingredients work together to lower blood pressure more effectively than either one alone.

This combination may be started as initial therapy or substituted when a patient has already been adjusted on both ingredients separately. It is approved for patients with normal kidney function, and is used more cautiously in those with impaired kidney function.
