Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Methylphenidate (the medication name here looks like a small typo for methylphenidate, the active ingredient in Ritalin and Concerta) is itself a stimulant for the brain and body. Caffeine is also a stimulant. When you stack two stimulants together, their effects can pile up. This isn't about one changing how the other is broken down. It's simply two go-faster signals working at the same time.

In real life, that might mean a faster or pounding heartbeat, feeling jittery or wired, trouble falling asleep, or more anxiety. Keep in mind this is based on expert reasoning rather than hard studies, and a normal cup of coffee may bother you far less than energy drinks or big doses. If you notice these effects, chat with your pharmacist or doctor before making any changes.

Caffeine is a natural stimulant found in coffee, tea, and many other plants and products.
