Clozapine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Cajeput Oil interacts with.

Evidence from in vitro research suggests that cajeput leaf extract can inhibit cytochrome P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) by approximately 30%. Theoretically, cajeput oil may increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6. Some drugs metabolized by CYP2D6 include amitriptyline (Elavil), clozapine (Clozaril), codeine, desipramine (Norpramin), donepezil (Aricept), fentanyl (Duragesic), flecainide (Tambocor), fluoxetine (Prozac), meperidine (Demerol), methadone (Dolophine), metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol XL), olanzapine (Zyprexa), ondansetron (Zofran), tramadol (Ultram), trazodone (Desyrel), and others.

Here's the basic idea. Your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP2D6 to help break down clozapine. Lab research hints that cajeput oil may slow that enzyme down by roughly a third. If that slowdown happened in real life, clozapine could clear out more slowly and build up in your system, which can mean stronger effects and more side effects like heavy sedation, dizziness, drooling, a racing heart, constipation, or a drop in blood pressure.

I want to be honest about how shaky this is. The evidence is only from test-tube studies, not people, so we truly don't know if it matters when you inhale or dab on the oil. But because clozapine is a closely monitored medication, please check with your prescriber or pharmacist before using cajeput oil.

What Is Clozapine Used For?

Clozapine is used for two specific situations. First, it is prescribed for people with severe schizophrenia who have already tried other antipsychotic medications and have not gotten adequate relief. It is reserved for this group because of its serious risks.

Second, clozapine is used to lower the chances of repeated suicidal behavior in people with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder who are considered to be at ongoing, chronic risk. It is not a first-choice medication — it is used when the need is serious and other options have fallen short.
