Propoxyphene falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Cajeput Oil interacts with.

Evidence from in vitro research suggests that cajeput leaf extract can inhibit cytochrome P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) by approximately 30%. Theoretically, cajeput oil may increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6. Some drugs metabolized by CYP2D6 include amitriptyline (Elavil), clozapine (Clozaril), codeine, desipramine (Norpramin), donepezil (Aricept), fentanyl (Duragesic), flecainide (Tambocor), fluoxetine (Prozac), meperidine (Demerol), methadone (Dolophine), metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol XL), olanzapine (Zyprexa), ondansetron (Zofran), tramadol (Ultram), trazodone (Desyrel), and others.

Here's the gist for propoxyphene: it's an opioid pain reliever that your liver processes in part through an enzyme called CYP2D6. Lab tests (only test tube research, not people) suggest cajeput leaf extract may slow this enzyme by about 30%. In theory, that could let propoxyphene linger a bit longer in your body, nudging up its effects and side effects like drowsiness, dizziness, constipation, nausea, or slowed breathing.

I'll be straight with you though, this is theoretical and based on weak lab evidence, so it may not amount to much in real life. Smelling or diluting cajeput on skin is far less concerning than swallowing concentrated oil (which you should never do). If you use both, just give your pharmacist or doctor a quick heads-up before combining them.

This combination product — available as capsules, tablets, and oral solution under various names including Fioricet — is used to relieve the symptoms of tension headaches (also called muscle contraction headaches).

All supported products, including Fioricet capsules and the oral solution, share this same indication. Because butalbital can be habit-forming, extended or repeated use is not recommended, and these products are not established as safe or effective for treating headaches that come back frequently over time.
