Cajeput Oil and Aripiprazole Lauroxil

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES

Why this applies to Aripiprazole Lauroxil

Aripiprazole Lauroxil falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Cajeput Oil interacts with.

Evidence from in vitro research suggests that cajeput leaf extract can inhibit cytochrome P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) by approximately 30%. Theoretically, cajeput oil may increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6. Some drugs metabolized by CYP2D6 include amitriptyline (Elavil), clozapine (Clozaril), codeine, desipramine (Norpramin), donepezil (Aricept), fentanyl (Duragesic), flecainide (Tambocor), fluoxetine (Prozac), meperidine (Demerol), methadone (Dolophine), metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol XL), olanzapine (Zyprexa), ondansetron (Zofran), tramadol (Ultram), trazodone (Desyrel), and others.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP2D6 to help clear aripiprazole (the active drug in Aristada). Lab studies hint that cajeput oil may slow this enzyme down by roughly a third. If that happened in real life, your aripiprazole levels could drift a bit higher than expected, which might mean more side effects like drowsiness, restlessness, dizziness, or mild tremors.

Here's the reassuring part: this is only a theoretical concern based on test-tube work, not human studies, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Aristada is also a long-acting injection your care team monitors closely. Still, since this medicine matters a lot for staying stable, just mention any cajeput oil use to your pharmacist or doctor before starting it.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Aripiprazole Lauroxil page

“Aripiprazole lauroxil (Aristada) is a long-acting antipsychotic injection, and because each dose keeps working for weeks, a bad supplement pairing cannot be undone by skipping a pill. So the 16 major-rated entries among its 233 interactions on file deserve to be understood first.”
